Ottoman Parliament

You are here : Home / Ottoman Parliament

The Ottoman Parliament, the General Assembly of the Ottoman Empire, was first established in 1876. It was considered as the voice of the people rather than a house full of political parties and organizations. The first constitutional era ended in two years with suspension of the Parliament by Abdulhamid II in 1878, and the restoration of absolute monarchy. The second constitutional era started in 1908 by the refoundation of the Parliament just after the Young Turk Revolution. In contrast with the first one, political parties and organizations were formed and joined the Parliament in the second constitutional era.
